This is probably related to ticket #18673 ( ). It is recommended to remove this option after a required mode is set once. So on each connection Openwrt writes to modem flash.
Most of modems (at least all Huawei models) store this setting in internal flash. If you are using option mode, an AT command setting the mode is sent to modem on every connection.
